Hello from Canada,

My name is Doug Marianchuk. I am a retired K9 handler from the Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) Policed Service and am now a member of the Canadian
Pacific Railway Police. I checked your site and saw that the monument dedicated to PSDs killed in the line of duty in Canada is now featured on your site. This is great. It was myself that came up with the concept of a national monument to honor fallen service dogs in Canada. I have worked on this, pretty much alone, since 1998 raising over $30,000 to complete the monument.

At our last PTO meeting many of the parents suggested bringing in a K-9 dog to give demonstrations to the students. I found your website and it looks like I may have hit the jackpot. Do you have any dates available between now and the end of the school year? How much would your fee be? We usually do two programs, one in the morning and one in the afternoon so as not to be too crowded in the gymnasium and to allow both the morning and afternoon kindergarten students the opportunity to enjoy the program.

I look forward to hearing from you. I can be reached via email at cedallas@aol.com. Thank you so much for considering this request.

Dear Mr.Cortina,

First I would like to apologize for contacting you regarding a nonessential issue for your department's consideration. Over the past four years I have attempted to accumulate succinct information about canine/humane search and rescue work...and how I might become a member of such a program. I might be incline to attribute my failure to a lack of proper contacts and/or procedural steps, however I was a research assistant at Yale's West Haven, VA for over three years and I can assure you I have made the appropriate contacts. I assure you that I understand how people involved in rescues are both emotionally and physically drained. By the nature of self-preservation they must find little motivation in supporting a new prospect. Needless to say no one is at fault nor blame to be placed on anyone.
I would like to offer my support to both the people and canines involved in rescue/retrival attempts at any capacity I can in the hope that I might eventually be able to train my own dog for such service. As a college senior (regardless of the fact I am 29), I am extremely interested in animal assisted therapy -- after witnessing the benefits of their companionship of my terminally ill mother for 18 years.
I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to recommend a canine rescue program which would aid in my quest to help people and provide them with the unconditional support offered by the dogs who seek them.

Thank you for your patience, time and understanding,
C. R. McHugh

I would like Allan to be remembered by all, as he has truly given his life and love to his country. Thank you for your time.

Dear Sir,

I am contacting you due to the fact that I am writing an article in Canada on a proposed amendment to the Canadian Criminal Code that would make it an offence for a person to hurt a police service animal. I understand that several states in the U.S. already have this type of legislation, and when I was reviewing your website, I came across a bio of William Nott. I understand that Mr. Nott is the founder of your organization, and that he testified before a committee of the Connecticut legislature in favor of legislation to protect police service animals. I thus thought that Mr. Nott would be a great person to talk to for my story, as I would appreciate his insight on whether this type of legislation has been effective in Connecticut. I am thus writing you to inquire whether you could pass on to me contact information such as an email address or a telephone number to enable me to contact Mr. Nott. Thank you for your assistance.

I want to thank all that are involved with this site and police K-9s in general. I love police officers and the job they do. K-9s are a life blood in police work and I admire all Departments able to employ such K-9 teams. I recall a demonstration once when I was about 10 or 11 in which I absolutely became forever attached to Police K-9s and the work they do. I have always loved dogs and German Shepherds in particular but the presentation put on cliched it for me. Connecticut State Police and my local city police organization put on a performance of K-9 prowess that held my attention long after the demo was through. Connecticut State Police Trooper Shaw and K-9 Saxon (German Shepherd), Shelton PD Officer Fusco and K-9 Jonah (Chocolate Lab) and Shelton PD Officer Madden and K-9 Danny (German Shepherd). I was capitvated by the K-9s flawless ability to perform such tasks without hestitation. Both human and dog work so well together. I am saddened by the recent loss of Shelton's K-9 Danny. He was retired in 2000 and recently died of respitory issues at the age of 15. Shelton PD could never be what is it is today without the K-9 unit of which Danny shall always be an everlasting part of. K-9s are awesome. I hope to be a K-9 officer one day or atleast be a huge sustaining supporter. For all the K-9 Officers, both human and canine, living or gone, working or retired, your force is better for having you on the team and society is better for have you on the beat. Peace and love.

Eiko was doing an area search when he caught an electrical wire and electrocuted his mouth and exposing his mandible bone. Three different types of Vets tried to help save him, but in the end, the infection that got into his mouth was too much and he had to be euthanized on 3/18/06 asa result of fatal anemia. In 2005 My K-9 partner of 4 years, Dr. Jekyll was found dead at my residence. The cause of death was ruled as undetermined, even after the vet had found small amounts of arsnic in his body tissue. The city we worked, Bald Knobb, Arkansas never placed a memorial or anything in his honor, even after numerous drug arrests and monies handed them.
I think Dr. Jekyll deserved more for his duty. Since talking to Lulu I have been told about a memorial that Dr. Jekyll's name would be placed. I hope this information is accurate and that My partner will finally be appreciated.
My 5 year old daughter still morns the passing of Dr. Jekyll and still says prayers for him, that is how it has effected my family. Your help in this matter will greatly be appreciated. Anymore questions please feel free to ask.

Dear Mr Cortina,

May I introduce myself.

My Name is Roy Ellaby and I am a Police Dog Handler of 16 years with the Greater Manchester Police in the UK. I have served almost 24 years with the force.

I came across your excellent site by accident via a Google search for info relating to my home city of Salford.

One of the results was the Lower Salford Township K9 patch. Obviously intrigued, I entered the fantastic world of your site.

Whilst I have not yet had the time to fully appreciate its contents, I in tend to give it as much attention as I can in the future.

My own future on the Dog Section, as we in the UK call ourselves, is in the balance right now as the force has decided it can do without 35 handlers and dogs. This is merely a cost cutting measure as our Chief Constable has been told he has £14 million LESS to spend this year.

Some of us are not even sure to be allowed to keep our dogs if we don't make the cut. My fella, Reno, is a five year old stud, so would still be of use to the force, having already sired maybe 100 pups.

We find out in about 6 weeks.

As for the patches, are they available for purchase?

If so, I guess I would have to contact the Lower Salford Township? I also assume that PA refers to Pennsylvania?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me and I apologise if I've gone on too much.

Great site.

Good Luck and God Bless.

Best regards

Roy Ellaby

Not that they're not important, too, but this year I'm just doing the law enforcement. (I see there is a K9 from my old home town in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I worked at the department there for several years prior to moving north.) Thanks, Jim. Any info would be helpful! Hope your holidays are blest with peace and just enough excitement to make things fun.

I wanted to let you know about a new part of our WebSite that will start in the new year. We will have a fallen heros page, dedicated to the K-9's that were killed in the line of duty. We will also donate 1,000 memorial cards in their honor. They don't have to have done cards with us to receive this. They just need to send a picture and what they want it to say. If you hear of any fallen heros between now and the time the WebSite is functional let us know and we will be happy to donate the memorial cards and add them to the list.

Sir,

I am hoping you might be able to help. My name is Jackie Jenkins. My husband, Brad Jenkins, is a officer with the Pike County, Indiana sheriffs department. Our county council will not allow the officers here to have k-9's. But that is not the problem. My son in law works for a prison here in southern Indiana. He was told by one of the K-9 officers at the prison that the prison commissioner no longer wanted to use Rott's. They were told to find them homes or have them put down. Now being the dog lovers that we are, our son in law called us to see if we would take the last Rott that they had. It was to be put down the next morning if someone did not take it. So we did. The only problem is that they had started his aggressiveness training. We have 2 grandchildren that I care for and another little one that I care for also. After having him here for awhile we can now see that he would not be a good dog to have with the little ones. Since my husband would not be allowed to use the dog for his work and we can not have him as a family pet we need someplace for him to go. I can not stand the thought of having to put him down but I do not know of any place that would want him. I am hoping with your connections with police K-9's you might be able to tell me of some department that would be will to take him and finish his training and let him do the job he was meant to do. Ours in a very small department and most of the ones around us are small also so a lot of them do not use k-9. if our department needs one we call the prisons. Any help you can give us would be a great help.

Sincerely,

Jackie Jenkins

Jeffrey, generally dogs that are police, government service (Customs, etc), bomb, drug or Military Working Dogs that are put up for adoption, the main requirement for adopting these dogs is that you have to be a current or former dog handler, either police or military.

But there are several places to start your search. One, go to www.vdhaonline.org which is the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association, second go to www.wardogsmemorial.org , third, go to www.vspa.com , which is Vietnam Security Police Association, and the last is search for Space Coast War Dog Association.

On each of these sites, go to the links part, and you'll find multiple links to find places to adopt dogs. On the VSPA site, go to the K9 section, and links.

Good luck, and let me know how you do, and also if there is anything I can do for you.

We are doing some research on behalf of our department to determine whether or not we should provide headgear of some type to officers when decoying in aggression related exercises. We have not used it in the past, and when exploring options, vendor sites for bite suits don’t seem to offer any. This would leave you with alternative types of gear such as football or other helmets. Overall, headgear should protect the head when wearing the bite suit, but there may be training or other reasons where its use might affect the quality of the canine’s performance.

Are you aware of any agencies or canine instructors using headgear protection? What might be the advantages or disadvantages when considering the use of such equipment?

Thank you for your help.

I was just looking to see if I could find some info on a dog that I raised and donated to the CT police force. His name is Dusty.. (German Shepherd) Probably retired by now. The officer who partnered up with him is named Mike Belanger. I know he did a lot of work in prisons and a lot of narcotics work. Great dog- wanted to see if there was a record of his service and a way to see what he accomplished as a police dog. I donated him in or near 1995. Would you have someone respond with some info?? I'm sure Dusty served CT well, and I hope he's enjoying his retirement these days. Thanks!!!

I am writing to you specifically because I hope one of your Association members might be able to help me. I have a very rare plate to offer in trade. It is a plate from the Maryland State Police K-9 Unit. To my knowledge, only Michigan and Maryland produce special license plates for the their State Police force's K-9 Units. These plates were obtained from an elderly collector in Ohio that I found through the Police Collector News. They are in mint condition. These plates can be seen on my web site, www.policecycle.com I have been collecting license plates from Police motorcycles for many years. My web site is devoted to my collection, love of motorcycles and my respect for law enforcement, when you have a chance, please visit. The site showcases my collection, tells you a little about me and hopefully shows that I am a legitimate and trustworthy collector. I can provide many references from Police Officers from around the country.I realize that this might be considered an odd request but license plate collecting is a large part of collecting Police related memorabilia, much like Patches and photos. Any help that you might be able to provide will be greatly appreciated! If you cannot help, I completely understand.

Thank you very much for your time.

Ladies and Gentleman,

Sense 1995 I work as a Police Officer here in Germany. My present duty location is the City of Greven. In the year 1999 I started to collect Police Insignias (Patches, Pins, Photographs, Cop Cards, T- Shirts etc.) Sense 2002 I am a member of the International Police Association. Now I am starting to collect police Insignias (items) from all over the World for my display and for the Museum.

The reason, why I am writing you is. I would like to ask you; if you could sent me some items like patches, Pins, Stickers, Photographs, etc. of your Department so we can extend our Collection for the Display in the Museum. I am very interested in informations about your Police Dept. Things like Crime Statistics, the fleet, special Units, and the historical background of your Department. We try to get our Collection on Patches (Dept. Patches, K-9, Narcotics, Bike Units, SWAT, ect.) so complete as Possible. Anything you can send us, is greatly Appreciated.

After our Collection is completed, we will set everything up in a Kind of World Police Patch Museum. I know until we get there is a long way, specialy after September 11th 2001, it is not easy to get all these Things from the Departments.

After our Collection is Complete and we can Open that Museum, our Idea is it to donate the Money, we make with Entrance Fees ect. to the Family´s of our Fallen Brothers and Sisters in the United States and Germany. Specialy to the Kids that have been left behind after September 11th.

Mostly T-shirts cost money, so please let me know how much they are and what kind of T-shirts your Dept. is selling. So I can send you the money for the T-shirts first. I also could trade T-shirts from Germany.

We are also looking for Officers that collect Patches, too. If there is anybody in your Police Dept. That would like to trade Patches and other Items from Germany, please give my address further.

I know that because of the things that happend on September 11th 2001, a lot changed security wise. A lot Departments request a Letter with an Official Letterhead. The only bad thing hewre is, our Departmend Letterheads are for OFFICIAL USE ONLY and we are not allowed to use em for Private thinks. What I can do, to Prove that I am an Police OFficer is, I can send you a Copy of my ID Card. Would that be Ok.

I hope to hear from you

I'm teaching law enforcement officers from Central Texas on Police K-9 Emergency Medicine. Who would I contact in order to get permission to print out and utilize the list of k-9's killed? Great website,
Hello my name is Neil H. Gang, and I am a k9 handler in Arizona. I have just recently opened a business that imports and sells working dogs. I was curious if there was someone that I could contact in reference to sending some information about my business. Also do you have any k9 competitions that all the dogs attend and compete against each other? I just met a handler from Amsbury, Mass who came down to compete in our annual "Desert Dog" k9 trials. It was interesting to discuss different training methods and philosophy with a different part of the country. I hope you all stay safe, The atate website is www.aleca.policek9.com

Best Regards,
Neil

Our first K-9Koda is in your book & is on the page for K-9's 2000 & prior. Koda has been on the site about a year now & I recieved an email from the first person to meet Koda AKA Vino. It was his importer. I immediatly told my husband & he confirmed that the person was the impoter. Your page has touched so many now Koda's first mommy knows what a true blessing he was. He served everyone well. So her "wine dog" became a Police K-9 Hero. I do not look forward to the day that our current K-9 "Devo" (age 9) makes it to the memorial side of things but I am glad to know he to will be remembered. It is hard as a "mommy" I see Devo & age sneaking up on him. It is even more evident with his "wife"Harley (age 3) is still so much puppy. Harley is our son's 3 yr old GSD that is used for 4-H agility. So for now we enjoy our two GSD's & know how noble the breed they really are. Now if they would just leave CLyde the goat alone!!!!

Don't get discouraged, this is a fantastic site.
Keep up the great work!! This is just an example of people who say, "It's just a dog!" and we know
better than that when they have saved so many lives in L.E. and military work.

Hi James, I received a link to your site. I am very impressed with your work. I also thank you for remembering Sirius as well. I am currently trying to have a Police K-9 Memorial in Washington D.C. for all LODD's. I may use this site as an example of a database that could help start this program (with your permission of course). Any suggestions would be extremely helpful. Thanks for caring.

Jim, thank you for your web site. All too often, there is no attention paid to the loss of a K9. The officer has to deal with his feelings of loss alone and his department is acting like the police dog is nothing but a piece of equipment that can easily be replaced. With your site and Lulu's site, these hurting officers see that someone cares about them and the loss of their partner, a partner that has a closer relationship than family members or other human partners.

Interesting site. I am just starting a Giant Schanuzer on SAR training.

It would be great if you listed the breed on your list of dogs killed in service. I am guessing most were GSDs.

Excellent, just excellent work on the website to honor the four legged partners of police officers. Too little attention is paid to the loss of a K9 in or out of the line of duty. Keep up the hard work, there are many officers out there that are glad to see you doing what you love.
